Shirebrook pupils get sporting boost with new equipment

Pupils at a Shirebrook school walked away with brand new rackets, balls, shirts and bats when they were given bagfuls of free sports equipment.

The students from Shirebrook Academy, in Common Lane, picked up the goodies after they were donated by retail giant Sports Direct, which is based in the town.

The school has a large and varied sports programme and boasts state-of-the-art facilities, which include a 3-G pitch, which are also used in the evenings and on weekends by a host of clubs and sports organisations including Shirebrook Rangers and Shirebrook Gymnastic Club.

The job of co-ordinating the out-of-hours use is handled by a company called Facilities for All, which put Sports Direct in touch with the Academy after the retailer contacted it to offer to donate equipment to a local school.

Andy Gilbert, vice principal at Shirebrook Academy, said: “Our rackets and footballs have a lot of use at school and it’s inevitable that there are going to be breakages and punctures along the way, so we are constantly having to replace them.

“This equipment will help to ensure that our pupils can continue to enjoy sport and we are very grateful to Sports Direct for their kind donation.”

Leon Turnbull, head of people at Sports Direct, said: “We recognise that we are a part of the community in Shirebrook and we wanted to give something back.

“I went to the Academy when it was still Shirebrook School and so did many of our workers, so it’s good to be able to help them out in this way.”
